Le diabète sucré est un trouble métabolique courant qui augmente le taux de glucose postprandial, ce qui peut entraîner des lésions de plusieurs organes et un risque de maladies cardiovasculaires, qui sont la cause la plus fréquente de décès chez les personnes atteintes de diabète. La gestion de la glycémie est essentielle pour le traitement précoce du diabète sucré et de ses complications. La forte augmentation du taux de glucose dans le sang après l’ingestion d’aliments dans l’intestin est favorisée par les enzymes α-Amylase qui transforment les glucides en sucres simples absorbables. Les inhibiteurs synthétiques d’enzymes tels que l’acarbose, le miglitol et le voglibose sont des médicaments hypoglycémiants oraux utiles pour contrôler l’hyperglycémie postprandiale, en particulier chez les patients atteints de diabète de type II. Ces inhibiteurs retardent la digestion des glucides et prolongent le temps nécessaire à l’absorption du glucose dans l’intestin. L’utilisation chronique de ces inhibiteurs en conjonction avec d’autres médicaments antidiabétiques entraîne des effets secondaires gastro-intestinaux tels qu’une gêne abdominale, des flatulences et des diarrhées.
