An American miner, working in an English coalmine, dies under the most bizarre circumstances. A few nights later, in West Virginia, his six-year-old daughter Rebecca is found cocooned in spider webs that fill her entire bedroom. Rebecca's mother is barely able to extract her daughter alive. In Sweden, White combines his professional and personal efforts with those of the stunning Secret Service Agent, Michiko. As the truth finally pierces the many layers of improbable findings, a seemingly innocent player emerges at the center of a plot too alien to grasp. White and Michiko are caught in the flow of unstoppable events, becoming cogs in a radically altering machine from which there is no escape.
