Welche sozialen Deutungsmuster entwickeln Jugendliche vor dem Hintergrund des Umbruchs in Ostdeutschland? Die Studie belegt Anzeichen soziokulturellen Wandels, etwa die Suche nach Selbstverwirklichung. Gleichzeitig spielen rassistische und rechtsextreme Deutungen der sozialen Realität eine große Rolle. Der Absturz aus dem Fürsorgestaat DDR in ein Umfeld von Individualisierung und Marktabhängigkeit hatte vielfach Anomieempfinden und Desorientierung zur Folge. Eine mögliche Reaktion ist die Flucht in autoritäre Gesellschaftsbilder. Rassismus bietet klare Gut-böse-Schemata statt Orientierungslosigkeit, soziale Integration durch Ausgrenzung anderer. Weitere Faktoren tragen zum alltäglichen Rassismus bei: fremdenfeindliche Diskurse in Politik und Medien, institutionelle Diskriminierung von Nichtdeutschen, auch die allgegenwärtige rechte Subkultur in Ostdeutschland. Nicht selten verbinden sich rassistische Orientierungen mit einer verklärenden Sicht der DDR.
