In beiden Projekten betrat Lazarsfeld methodisches Neuland.Paul Lazarsfeld überschritt viele Grenzen. Von intellektueller Neugierde bestimmt, widmete er sich der Forschung und der akademischen Lehre. Als Homo Politicus nahm er - in verschiedenen Lebensabschnitten und in unterschiedlicher Form - Anteil an der Politik. Als Europäer war er von der „Alten Welt' geprägt. Aber er ging voll und ganz in der „Neuen' auf: in Amerika. Lazarsfelds persönliches Leben und seine wissenschaftliche Karriere passen in kein exklusiv etikettierbares Muster.
