Mit einer empirischen Studie untersucht Robert Neumann, ob sich Leistungsunterschiede von Studienanfängern im Bereich mathematischer Grundfertigkeiten auf den in der Schule verwendeten Taschenrechnertyp zurückführen lassen. Auf der Basis von Leistungstests mit über 450 Studierenden liefert der Autor einen empirisch gestützten Beitrag zu den Langzeitauswirkungen verschiedener Computeralgebrasysteme, die im Mathematikunterricht verwendet wurden. Dabei kann der Autor im Bereich der Interpretation von Funktionsgraphen signifikante Unterschiede feststellen. Seine Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass es eine Gruppe von Schülern und Schülerinnen gibt, die bisher nicht im erhofften Maße von Rechnertechnologien profitieren.​
