Jednak w Indiach tradycyjne wartości i normy nadal odgrywają istotną rolę w procesie zawierania małżeństw, np. wiek w momencie zawarcia małżeństwa, proces wyboru partnera, praktyka posagu, status panny młodej w rodzinie, przemoc w życiu małżeńskim itp. Ogólnym celem badania jest zrozumienie różnych wymiarów życia małżeńskiego wśród młodych mężów i żon w wybranych stanach. Dane do niniejszego badania pochodzą z ankiety „Młodzież w Indiach: sytuacja i potrzeby' przeprowadzonej w latach 2006-2007. Małżeństwa aranżowane są najpopularniejszą formą małżeństwa we wszystkich wybranych stanach. Z wyjątkiem stanów Andhra Pradesh i Tamil Nadu, niewielka liczba młodych ludzi w mniej rozwiniętych stanach znała swojego przyszłego małżonka przed ślubem. Lepsza sytuacja ekonomiczna, poziom wykształcenia i wykształcenie matki, a zwłaszcza wykształcenie zamężnych kobiet, okazały się istotnymi i pozytywnymi czynnikami determinującymi interakcję z małżonkiem przed ślubem.
