Badanie wykazało, że osoby niepełnosprawne mogą grupować swoje sposoby nadawania sensu w trzy nadrzędne kategorie: dostosowywanie się do zmian fizycznych, akceptowanie tego, co niemożliwe, oraz wytrwałe dążenie do codziennej wygody. W przypadku głównych opiekunów rodzinnych rozumienie rzeczywistości opisano w odniesieniu do nadrzędnych tematów: radzenie sobie z konfrontacją; bycie obecnym w rodzinie; oraz akceptacja różnic. W ujęciu zbiorowym, jako gospodarstwo domowe, rozumienie rzeczywistości obejmuje: ponowne/potwierdzanie normatywności; renegocjowanie zmian; ułatwianie kreatywności i eksperymentowania; pokonywanie kruchości życia i jego nieprzewidywalności. Te nadrzędne tematy są badane poprzez dwadzieścia siedem podrzędnych tematów ilustrowanych werbalnie głosami uczestników oraz wizualnie poprzez zdjęcia uczestników w ich domach. Wyniki badań podkreślają rolę tych elementów i wkład badania w dyscypliny projektowania przestrzennego, a także pogłębiają nasze zrozumienie niepełnosprawności i tego, jak jej znaczenie jest negocjowane ekologicznie w czasie i przestrzeni.
