In diesem Buch untersuchen wir die Notwendigkeit und die Auswirkungen der Maßnahmen, die im Rahmen des Treibhausgasemissionsziels der Wachstumsstrategie Europa 2020 in den EU-15-Staaten verabschiedet wurden. Um die Notwendigkeit der Maßnahmen zu überprüfen, verwenden wir die Hypothese der Umwelt-Kuznets-Kurve (EKC) für Kohlendioxidemissionen (CO2) als theoretischen Rahmen, das autoregressive verteilte Lag-Modell als ökonometrische Technik und Jahresdaten von 1970 bis 2010 (im Falle Deutschlands von 1991 bis 2010). Die Existenz der EKC wird in Belgien, Dänemark, Frankreich, Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Spanien, Schweden und dem Vereinigten Königreich festgestellt. Allerdings wird die EKC-Hypothese nur in Dänemark signifikant (auf einem Signifikanzniveau von zehn Prozent) bestätigt. Gemäß der Hauptimplikation der EKC-Hypothese ist nur in Dänemark die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung ausreichend, um die Umweltqualität zu sichern.
