Wzrost zużycia energii pochodzącej z paliw kopalnych, takich jak benzyna, w sektorze transportowym, spowodowany brakiem innych zrównoważonych, odnawialnych i przyjaznych dla środowiska źródeł energii, doprowadził do problemów takich jak globalne ocieplenie i zmiany klimatyczne. Biopaliwa pierwszej generacji produkowane z upraw spożywczych, takich jak kukurydza i trzcina cukrowa, oraz biopaliwa drugiej generacji produkowane z surowców lignocelulozowych nie były w stanie zaspokoić globalnego zapotrzebowania na bioetanol ze względu na ich wykorzystanie jako żywności, wysokie ceny tych surowców i duże ilości ziemi wykorzystywanej do ich uprawy. Jednak biopaliwa trzeciej generacji pozyskiwane z alg wydają się być zrównoważonym źródłem energii odnawialnej, ponieważ algi są szeroko rozpowszechnione w naturze i mają zdolność gromadzenia w sobie dużych ilości skrobi i celulozy, które można przekształcić w bioetanol.
