Jednak biopaliwa trzeciej generacji pozyskiwane z alg wydają się być zrównoważonym źródłem energii odnawialnej, ponieważ algi są szeroko rozpowszechnione w naturze i mają zdolność gromadzenia w sobie dużych ilości skrobi i celulozy, które można przekształcić w bioetanol.
