Zanieczyszczenie wód gruntowych arsenem jest powszechne i istnieje wiele regionów, w których zanieczyszczenie wody pitnej arsenem jest znaczne. Zidentyfikowano już tysiące osób dotkniętych zatruciem arsenem, oprócz milionów potencjalnie zagrożonych piciem skażonej wody. Zapewnienie wody wolnej od arsenu jest pilnie potrzebne do natychmiastowej ochrony zdrowia i dobrego samopoczucia ludzi mieszkających na obszarach dotkniętych arsenem. W większości przypadków zastąpienie wody ze studni rurowych alternatywnym, bezpiecznym i niezawodnym źródłem zaopatrzenia w wodę nie jest łatwym zadaniem. Objawy i oznaki spowodowane długotrwałym podwyższonym narażeniem na arsen nieorganiczny różnią się w zależności od osoby, grupy ludności i obszarów geograficznych. W związku z tym nie istnieje uniwersalna definicja choroby wywołanej przez arsen. Komplikuje to ocenę wpływu arsenu na zdrowie. Wykazano, że mikroorganizmy takie jak Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, Lepto spirillum ferrooxdans i grzyby takie jak Scopulariopsis previcaulus, Penicillum sp., Gliocladium roseum i drożdże Candida humicola utleniają As (III) do mniej toksycznej formy As (V).
