Wraz z przyspieszonym wzrostem populacji miejskiej Brazylii w ostatniej dekadzie, powstały zurbanizowane regiony kraju. W konsekwencji nastąpił wzrost budownictwa i uszczelniania gleby, co doprowadziło do nieplanowanego zmniejszenia infiltracji wody deszczowej do gleby i zmodyfikowanego obiegu wody (z powodu większego spływu powierzchniowego). Stan Sergipe nie uniknął „reguły urbanizacji', a także ma historię powodzi. Aby kontrolować te zmiany, konieczne jest użycie narzędzi do określenia procentu nieprzepuszczalnych obszarów w dorzeczu. Narzędzia te mogą identyfikować (na podstawie obrazów) i generować wartości użytkowania gruntów i zajęcia, takie jak programy do geoprzetwarzania. W tym badaniu sklasyfikowano cztery wielospektralne obrazy z satelity Quickbird, na których można zlokalizować strefę ekspansji miasta Aracaju (oprócz dzielnic Atalaia, Aeroporto, Grageru i Jardins w tym samym mieście), położoną w stanie Sergipe w północno-wschodniej Brazylii. Obrazy zostały sklasyfikowane i określono procent powierzchni nieprzepuszczalnej dla każdego obszaru spisowego.
