Recykling i przetwarzanie PET, potencjalnie zanieczyszczającego środowiska odpadu, przynosi korzyści, od zmniejszenia zanieczyszczenia środowiska po generowanie dochodów i zmniejszenie wydatków publicznych. Wykorzystanie tego odpadu jako surowca do produkcji dachówek okazało się mniej szkodliwe dla środowiska w porównaniu z tradycyjnymi dachówkami ceramicznymi. Jednak inwestycja w zakłady recyklingu zależy od ich ekonomicznej opłacalności. Biorąc pod uwagę tę kwestię, oceniono ekonomiczną opłacalność uruchomienia zakładu recyklingu PET w gminie Ilhéus-Bahia, o początkowej zdolności produkcyjnej 20 ton PET miesięcznie, przeznaczonego do sprzedaży. Wykorzystano następujące wskaźniki: zwrot z inwestycji (ROI), wartość bieżąca netto (NPV), wewnętrzna stopa zwrotu (IRR) oraz czas zwrotu z inwestycji (PAYBACK). Wyniki wskazały na wykonalność projektu, a także przedstawiły trzy filary zrównoważonego rozwoju (korzyści społeczne, ekonomiczne i środowiskowe), które musi spełniać każdy projekt wykonalnościowy.
