Starzenie się społeczeństwa jest zjawiskiem ogólnoświatowym, ale szczególnie zaawansowanym w wysoko rozwiniętych krajach północnych. Zjawisko to wpłynie na główne aspekty procesów demograficznych i spowoduje wzrost regionalnych nierówności. Starzenie się jest jednym z głównych zjawisk w kwestiach demograficznych dotyczących ludności świata, które są bardzo rozległe i głębokie nawet dla regionu europejskiego. W ciągu 50 lat średnia wieku ludności europejskiej wzrośnie z 37 do 47 lat. Do roku 2040 co czwarta osoba będzie miała 65 lat, a co siódma - 75 lat. W różnych krajach procesy te przebiegają w różny sposób. Są one specyficzne pod względem demograficznym i dla każdej populacji. Republika Mołdawii zajmuje 14. miejsce na świecie pod względem procesów starzenia się w porównaniu z krajami znajdującymi się w czołówce pod względem starzenia się. W ciągu najbliższych 30-40 lat emeryci będą stanowić największą część społeczeństwa. Tendencja ta będzie prawie niemożliwa do zmiany. Młoda populacja jest lepiej wykształcona i otwarta na wszelkie zmiany i przemiany społeczne, nawet w okresach przejścia do gospodarki rynkowej.
