Niniejsze badanie miało na celu zidentyfikowanie istniejącego wpływu na środowisko w Obszarze Ochrony Środowiska Vargem das Flores (APA), położonym między gminami Contagem i Betim/MG, w szczególności oznak zanieczyszczenia ściekami w zbiorniku Várzea das Flores, ważnym źródle wody dla regionu metropolitalnego Belo Horizonte. W celu przygotowania pracy przeprowadzono badania bibliograficzne na tematy związane ze znaczeniem wody, brazylijską urbanizacją i jej wpływem na środowisko, Krajowym Systemem Jednostek Ochrony (SNUC) i gminą Contagem. Analizy przeprowadzono między innymi na danych z Minas Gerais Sanitation Company (COPASA), Brazylijskiego Instytutu Geografii i Statystyki (IBGE), Urzędu Miasta Contagem (PMC), Krajowego Systemu Informacji Sanitarnej (SNIS), Stanowego Systemu Informacji Sanitarnej (SEIS), Instytutu Gospodarki Wodnej Minas Gerais (IGAM). Przeprowadzono analizę ostatecznego przeznaczenia ścieków z zakładów w APA i ich potencjalnego wpływu na zbiornik.
