The issue of mental distress is an integral part of the problems increasingly affecting modern society. Present in all spheres of society and on every continent, as demonstrated by the scientific literature, it also affects higher education institutions in Africa, Europe, the Americas, etc., notably Félix Houphouët-Boigny University in Cocody, Abidjan.This study aims to examine this phenomenon amongst the academic staff at this university, according to their academic rank or grade. To this end, a questionnaire was administered to 334 respondents from this institution, constituting a sample selected using the on-site sampling technique. The respondents were divided into two groups, each pair being equivalent in terms of gender, height, age, length of service, family responsibilities, and socio-political and trade union affiliations. The data collected were analysed using Student’s t-test. This test enables the working hypothesis to be verified and yields constructive results.
