Slums wurden in den 1850er und 1890er Jahren errichtet. Laut der Volkszählung 2011 leben 5,41 % der indischen Bevölkerung in Slums. Aufgrund der zunehmenden Verstädterung liegt die Gesamtzahl der Slumbewohner jetzt bei 65 494 604. Die männliche Bevölkerung in den Slums beträgt 33.968.203, die weibliche 31.526.401. Die rasche Verstädterung überzeugte die ehemals Unruhestifter, was zum Ausbau der städtischen Infrastruktur und zur Entstehung von Slumgebieten führte. Die Mehrheit der Slumbewohner sind Migranten. Slums sind gekennzeichnet durch überfüllte Wohnverhältnisse, unhygienische Umgebungen und einen Mangel an grundlegenden Annehmlichkeiten wie Müll- und Abwasserentsorgung (Latrinen), fehlende gute Wasserversorgung, minderwertiger Wohnungsbau, Wasser und fehlende Belüftung, Straßen- und Stromversorgung, Verkehrsstaus und kleine Hausgrößen. Die vorliegende Studie konzentriert sich auf viele Elemente der Slumentwicklung im Distrikt Tirupattur. Dieses Buch gibt einen Überblick über die sozioökonomischen Bedingungen der Slumbewohner im Bezirk Tirupattur in Tamil Nadu, Indien.
