Fasten ist der biologische Zustand, in dem Tiere aufgrund einer extrinsischen Einschränkung ihres Nahrungsangebots nicht fressen können, während Fasten bedeutet, dass Tiere aufgrund intrinsischer Faktoren nicht fressen können, obwohl Nahrung vorhanden ist. Unter Hungern oder Fasten versteht man den vollständigen Ausschluss jeglicher Nahrung außer Wasser. In dieser Studie wurde festgestellt, dass akutes Fasten zu einer unbemerkten Verringerung des Körper- und Organgewichts sowie zu histologischen und chemischen Veränderungen führt, d. h. zur Schrumpfung der Säulenzellen, zur Erweiterung der schleimabsondernden Zellen bzw. zur Verringerung der neutralen Schleimsubstanzen. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass Hungern strukturelle Veränderungen im Darm hervorruft, die direkt proportional zur Fastenzeit sind.
