’West Country Brownings’ is a survey of where Brownings can be found in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire from the Norman Conquest to the late nineteenth century and suggests an origin for the surname itself. It is not a conventional family history but should be of interest to Brownings with roots in these counties who are researching their own family’s history.
