Das Werkstoffverhalten in biologischen Systemen ist allgegenwärtig, sei es die Geruchsbelästigung aus Abwasserleitungen oder das infektiöse Lockern eines Zahnstiftes. Aufbauend auf den grenzflächenphysikalischen Phänomenen werden die materialwissenschaftlichen Probleme aller drei Anwendungsrichtungen (Biotechnologie, Biomimetrie, Medizintechnik einschließlich der Biomaterialien) in ihren Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden dargestellt. Der Exkurs in die Modellierung dient zum Aufzeigen möglicher Grenzen. Das Buch bildet eine anwendungsbezogene Klammer zwischen der Biologie und den Materialwissenschaften, anschaulich illustriert an Hand von zahlreichen Bildern und Tabellen. Diese Arbeitsrichtungen führen zu einem neuen Technologieschub, so daß dem Lernenden und in der Praxis Suchenden ein Leitfaden für dieses interdisziplinäre Gebiet in die Hand gegeben wird.
