Weizenrost hat eine verheerende Wirkung, da er Hungersnöte verursacht, die weltweit häufig zu sozioökonomischer Instabilität führen. Die Geschichte ist voll von Epidemien von Blatt-, Streifen- und Stängelrost, die in der Vergangenheit im frühen 19. Jahrhundert zu erheblichen Verlusten geführt haben und auch in Zukunft eine große Bedrohung für die Weizenproduktion darstellen würden. Diese Studie konzentrierte sich auf die molekulare Charakterisierung einer dauerhaften Rostresistenz gegen Blatt-, Streifen- und Stängelrost in neuen Weizensorten. Ertrag und Rostresistenz können durch die Pyramidenformung von Genen für ein hohes Ertragspotenzial und Genen für Rostresistenz in Top-, Back- und Doppelkreuzungsmethoden erhöht werden. Die chemische Bekämpfung ist bei einer Weizenanbaufläche von 9 Millionen Hektar in Pakistan und weltweit sehr kostspielig. Die genetische Bekämpfung ist eine geeignetere Lösung für Weizenrost. Das Rostüberwachungsprogramm funktioniert im Land effizient und anfällige Sorten werden vom Markt genommen und durch neue resistente Weizensorten ersetzt. So wurde pak-81 durch Inq-91 ersetzt. In ähnlicher Weise wurde Inq-91 durch Seher-06 ersetzt und nun wurden Seher-06 und Shafaq-06 durch neue Sorten ersetzt, d. h. Lassani-08, Faisalabad-08, Punjab-11, Millat-11, Galaxy-13 und Ujalla-16.
