Rak jest drugą najczęstszą przyczyną śmiertelności ludzi. Na całym świecie prowadzone są badania mające na celu opracowanie metod leczenia, w tym chemioterapii, umożliwiających skuteczniejsze zwalczanie tej śmiertelnej choroby. Potencjalnymi kandydatami do opracowania funkcjonalnie aktywnych środków chemioterapeutycznych są związki pochodzenia naturalnego. Eukaliptus to różnorodny rodzaj (ponad 700 gatunków) drzew kwitnących, występujących na całym świecie, głównie w tropikach i subtropikach. Bioaktywne substancje uzyskane z eukaliptusa mają szeroki zakres potencjału farmakologicznego, a także zastosowań. Niniejsza praca miała na celu zbadanie właściwości przeciwnowotworowych E. camaldulensis w modelu zwierzęcym. Związki i ekstrakty z tej rośliny wykazały silne hamowanie wzrostu komórek nowotworowych przy minimalnej toksyczności dla gospodarza. Leczenie tym składnikiem roślinnym wywołało apoptozę komórek nowotworowych. Opracowanie leków wykorzystujących eukaliptus może dać nową nadzieję na leczenie raka w przyszłości.
