Esses impactos da subida do nível do mar provocarão indiretamente vários impactos em diferentes actividades humanas e no ambiente natural. Para avaliar a vulnerabilidade costeira global, é necessário ter em conta a vulnerabilidade física e social. Este estudo centrou-se em factores físicos e sociais específicos que influenciam a vulnerabilidade costeira na zona de estudo. A zona de estudo situa-se na parte nordeste do Delta do Nilo, estendendo-se de Gamasa, a oeste, a Ras El Barr, a leste, e por cerca de 15 km em terra. O braço do Nilo de Damietta estende-se por cerca de 20 km na parte oriental da área de estudo. A área total abrangida é de cerca de 407,56 km2.
