Der Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs entfachte eine Debatte zwischen verschiedenen Theorien, die die Ursachen und Folgen dieser Konflikte zu erklären versuchten. Unter den wichtigsten Denkern dieser Zeit galt Karl Kautsky, Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Die Neue Zeit, als der erste Schüler von Marx und Engels und übte durch seine Artikel großen sozialen Einfluss aus. Im Jahr 1914 legte Kautsky in den Artikeln Der Imperialismus und der Krieg, Der Ultraimperialismus und Die Vorbereitung zum Frieden seine Interpretation und Erwartungen in Bezug auf diese Zeit dar. Der Inhalt dieser Artikel ist von grundlegender Bedeutung für alle, die sich mit dem Autor und dem 20. Jahrhundert beschäftigen oder zumindest etwas darüber erfahren möchten. Der umstrittene Satz „Kapitalisten aller Länder, vereinigt euch!', der seinem Konzept des Ultraimperialismus Sinn verlieh, ist vielleicht prophetisch und hat sich erfüllt oder ist zumindest kurz davor. Mit einer Interpretation der Gegenwart auf der Grundlage dieser Artikel ist es möglich, einen kritischen Blick auf die historische Entwicklung der letzten 100 Jahre zu werfen.
