La 'questione cipriota' affonda le sue radici nel momento stesso della costituzione di Cipro come Stato indipendente e rimane tuttora irrisolta, essendo un conflitto congelato ma tra i più intrattabili al mondo. Le narrazioni dello Stato e della società civile sulla risoluzione del conflitto cipriota possono essere molto diverse. Anni di divisione hanno prodotto immagini conflittuali e percezioni negative dell’'altro'. Attraverso lo studio di fonti accademiche, rapporti delle Nazioni Unite e interviste personali, il ricercatore cerca di identificare queste contro-narrazioni. Il loro meccanismo di auto-alimentazione e il loro impatto sulle prospettive di pace a Cipro sono presentati e le loro motivazioni analizzate. Al centro delle contro-narrazioni della RdC ci sono le caratteristiche di inimicizia, vittimismo, colpevolizzazione, sfiducia e odio. Le contro-narrazioni della società civile si concentrano sulla cooperazione, la comunicazione, la simpatia, la fiducia e il desiderio di un modello educativo inclusivo. Il ricercatore formula due raccomandazioni. In primo luogo, la presenza di rappresentanti della società civile durante il nuovo ciclo di 'colloqui di pace' tra i leader potrebbe fare la differenza e contribuire a passare da un approccio conflittuale a uno più riflessivo. In secondo luogo, è necessario che la RdC riconosca o accolga formalmente il ruolo della società civile.
