Dies ist ein historischer Überblick über die visuelle Kultur der Jahre I und II der Französischen Revolution. Insbesondere werden die Rolle der Philosophie der Aufklärung als theoretische Grundlage der Revolution, Hegels Wahrnehmung der Ereignisse in Frankreich und vor allem die Rolle des Terrors als Machtsystem nacheinander untersucht. Das zentrale Argument lautet, dass der Terror eine politische Methode war, die von der Revolutionsregierung als Teil einer kulturellen Revolution visuell eingesetzt wurde, um einer widerstrebenden Bürgerschaft die Ideale des freien Willens, der Tugend und einer aufgeklärten Regierung zu vermitteln.
