O hipotiroidismo congénito é uma produção inadequada de hormonas da tiroide nos recém-nascidos. Pode ocorrer devido a um defeito anatómico da glândula, a um erro inato do metabolismo da tiroide ou a uma deficiência de iodo. É designado por cretinismo. O hipotiroidismo congénito (HTC) é uma doença resultante de uma glândula tiroide ausente ou subdesenvolvida (disgenesia) ou de uma glândula que se desenvolveu mas não consegue produzir hormona tiroide devido a um problema na 'linha de produção' (disormonogénese). Os bebés com CHT não conseguem produzir hormona tiroideia suficiente para as necessidades do organismo. O termo 'congénito' significa que a doença está presente à nascença.
