Eine der Entdeckungen, die bei Virus-Wirt-Interaktionen gemacht wurden, sind die sogenannten viralen RNA-Silencing-Suppressorproteine, die eine Schlüsselrolle im viralen Infektionsprozess spielen. Aus praktischer Sicht können diese Proteine auch in vitro manipuliert und in vivo von den Forschern zu bestimmten Zwecken eingesetzt werden, z. B. zur Steigerung der exogenen Proteinexpression in Pflanzen und zur Erhöhung der viralen Infektion in Beimpfungssystemen mit geringer Effizienz. Dieses Buch gibt einen Überblick über die Anwendungen dieser speziellen Proteine mit den oben genannten Zielen und erörtert ihre potenzielle Verwendung in kommenden Forschungsprojekten.
