A rubéola é uma infeção viral contagiosa do trato respiratório transmitida por gotículas transportadas pelo ar. Nas mulheres grávidas, o vírus provoca aborto espontâneo ou nado-morto e/ou malformações congénitas graves e doenças crónicas, coletivamente designadas por síndrome da rubéola congénita (SRC). O risco de defeitos congénitos após a infeção materna por rubéola chega a atingir 90%. Estima-se que, em todo o mundo, mais de 110.000 crianças nasçam com a síndrome da rubéola congénita todos os anos. A maioria destes casos ocorre em países em desenvolvimento que ainda não introduziram a vacina contra a rubéola. Não existem estudos recentes realizados para avaliar o peso da infeção por rubéola nas mulheres grávidas e a SRC na Etiópia.
