Die Studie über die Vielfalt und Verbreitung mittelgroßer Säugetiere wurde im Pomene-Nationalreservat mit dem Ziel durchgeführt, die Vielfalt und Verbreitung mittelgroßer Säugetierarten in den drei Lebensräumen (Dense Miombo, Open Miombo und Shrub Prairie) des RNP zu untersuchen. Zur Datenerhebung mit der direkten Methode wurden alle Beobachtungspfade in jedem Lebensraum morgens und am Ende des Tages zu Fuß abgegangen. Jeder Spaziergang war 2 km lang, und sobald eine Herde im Umkreis von 1 km von den Beobachtern beobachtet wurde, wurde die Art identifiziert, die Gesamtzahl der Individuen jeder Art gezählt und die geografische Koordinate des Standorts festgehalten. Bei der indirekten Methode wurden 16 Transekte mit einer Länge von 1000 m und einem Durchmesser von 100 m im Abstand von 500 m nach dem Zufallsprinzip festgelegt, um Proben von nachtaktiven Tieren zu sammeln. Auf jedem Transekt wurden die Arten anhand ihrer Spuren (Kot und Fußabdrücke) identifiziert und die Gesamtzahl der Individuen jeder Art erfasst.
