Veranilda is a historical novel written by George Gissing, originally published in 1904. The story is set in Italy during the sixth century, a time of great political and social upheaval. The novel follows the journey of a young Gothic noblewoman named Veranilda, who is kidnapped by the Byzantine army and taken to Constantinople. There, she is forced to confront the complexities of Byzantine politics and the tensions between the Gothic and Byzantine empires. Along the way, Veranilda meets a cast of characters, including the enigmatic and charismatic senator Basil, who becomes her ally and protector. As Veranilda struggles to navigate the treacherous political landscape and find her way back to her people, she must also confront her own desires and the conflicting loyalties that threaten to tear her apart. With its vivid historical detail and complex characters, Veranilda is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and political intrigue.I guessed as much. The suspicion came to me at a certain moment this morning -- a mere grain, which ever since has been growing tanquam favus. I am not wont to consider myself as of much use, but is it not just possible that, in this case, your humble kinsman might serve you?’This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
