O objetivo deste livro é reunir conhecimentos e investigar os factores que influenciam a resposta dos doentes com leucemia promielocítica aguda à quimioterapia convencional. A monitorização da resposta à terapêutica da LPA é um processo contínuo que se inicia com o diagnóstico e prossegue de forma seriada ao longo de todo o tratamento. Este é o primeiro estudo realizado no vale de Caxemira (Norte da Índia) sobre a leucemia promielocítica aguda até à data em termos de acompanhamento da doença. O nosso estudo confirmou que a cariotipagem, utilizando o sangue periférico como analito, é um fator determinante do resultado global da doença, da indução de remissões bem sucedidas, do risco de recaída e da sobrevivência global. Também relatámos o estado de hipermetilação do promotor do gene p15 como um indicador de prognóstico prospetivo e uma ajuda clínica fiável na avaliação de doentes com APL. Este facto abre uma nova perspetiva para que outros investigadores realizem mais estudos sobre a doença, a fim de descobrirem a relevância ou não das observações e da técnica para utilização futura.
