In Sudafrica, il Piano nazionale per l’istruzione superiore (NPHE, 2001) ha comportato notevoli cambiamenti nel panorama dell’istruzione superiore. Tra i principali cambiamenti vi sono state le fusioni di vari istituti di istruzione superiore. Nel 2005 è stata istituita la Walter Sisulu University for Technology (WSU), nata dalla fusione dei precedenti Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon e University of Transkei. L’Università si rivolge agli studenti delle regioni di Border e Kei del Capo Orientale, il che comporta la comunicazione con un gran numero di stakeholder. Una comunicazione efficace e lo sviluppo e il mantenimento di relazioni con le principali parti interessate diventano quindi fondamentali. Questo studio si proponeva di esaminare l’efficacia percepita delle strategie di comunicazione tra l’Università Walter Sisulu e gli studenti. Un approccio di tipo misto ha rilevato che, sebbene gli intervistati ritengano che la comunicazione sia soddisfacente, sono stati sollevati dubbi sull’efficacia delle strategie di comunicazione utilizzate. Lo studio raccomanda la comunicazione elettronica come strategia chiave per facilitare la comunicazione con gli studenti.
