أتذكّر، بشيء من الاستغراب، ما فعله عبد العظيم شوداك الميكانيكيّ الأربعينيّ الأعرج، شبه الأصمّ، الذي عُثر عليه مرّة داخل حجرة التوليد، تفوح من جلده رائحة الشحم وزيوت المحرّكات القديمة، وهو يضع على عينيه نظّارة بزجاج رقيق من تلك التي تستخدم في القراءة، وتباع في أيّ مكان، ويحيط رقبته بسمّاعة طبّيّة مشقّقة، عثر عليها كما يبدو في أحد المكاتب المفتوحة بلا رقابة، ويضع في يده اليمنى قفّازًا من المطّاط السميك لم يكن يُستخدم في الفحص النسائيّ أبدًا، ولكن غالبًا عند عمّال المجاري، وفي البيوت، لحماية اليدين عند غسيل الحلل والأطباق. كان يتنقّل بين النزيلات الغارقات في الألم والدم، بوصفه طبيبًا للنساء والتوليد، وقد راقب المكان حتّى تأكّد تمامًا من عدم وجود ممرّضة أو داية أو طبيب، ثمّ دخل. لكن، ولسوء حظّه، كانت إحدى نزيلات الغرفة، واسمها تماضر كما أذكر، من سكّان حيّه، وتسكن على بعد شارع منه، تعرّفت إليه حالما لمحته، وصرخت مازجة صراخها بأوجاع الطلق:شوداك... شوداك الميكانيكيّ. شوداك!.I remember, quite in schock, what Abdelazim Shudak, the forty-year-old crippled and almost deaf mechanic did. He was found once inside the delivery room, emanating the smell of grease and old engine oils. He wore a pair of eyeglasses with thin lenses similar to those used for reading, easily available anywhere. A cracked medical stethoscope hung around his neck, which he apparently found in one of the unattended offices. In his right hand, he held a thick rubber glove that was never used for gynecological examinations but rather commonly used by sewage workers, as well as in households to protect hands while washing utensils and dishes. He moved among the agonized and bloodied patients, assuming the role of an obstetrician gynecologist. He thoroughly observed the area to make sure there were no nurses, midwives, or doctors present, and then entered.However, to his misfortune, one of the patients in the room, whose name I recall as Tamader, was from his neighborhood and lived just a street away. She recognized him as soon as she caught sight of him and screamed, her screams blending with the pains of labor, ''Shudak... Shudak the mechanic. Shudak!''
