Sowohl Strahlentherapie als auch Chemotherapie haben schädliche Auswirkungen auf normales Gewebe bei Krebspatienten und lösen daher eine Immunreaktion in diesem Gewebe aus. Ionisierende Strahlung verursacht in Wechselwirkung mit lebenden Zellen eine Vielzahl von Veränderungen, die von der Art der Exposition, der absorbierten Dosis, der Dauer der Exposition, dem Zeitraum nach der Exposition und auch der Empfindlichkeit des Gewebes abhängen. Dabei ist zu berücksichtigen, dass aus dem Knochenmark stammende Zellen für die Erhaltung, Bildung und Erneuerung differenzierter Zellen verantwortlich sind, die durch den physiologischen Zellumsatz oder durch Gewebeschäden aufgrund von Verletzungen verloren gehen.
