Anche se l’energia eolica genera elettricità piuttosto che combustibili liquidi, e quindi non è un sostituto immediato del petrolio nella maggior parte delle applicazioni (soprattutto nei trasporti), i timori per la scarsità di petrolio hanno aumentato l’urgenza di espandere l’energia eolica. Le precedenti crisi petrolifere avevano già indotto molti utenti di servizi pubblici e industriali a passare al carbone o al gas naturale. L’energia eolica ha mostrato il potenziale per sostituire il gas naturale nella produzione di energia elettrica in base ai costi.Entro il 2021 l’energia eolica produrrà 4872 terawattora, il 2,8% della produzione totale di energia primaria e il 6,6% della produzione totale di elettricità. Le innovazioni tecnologiche continuano a guidare nuovi sviluppi nell’applicazione dell’energia eolica. Nel 2015, la turbina eolica più grande era la Vistas V164 da 8 MW di capacità per uso offshore. Nel 2014 erano in funzione nel mondo oltre 240.000 turbine eoliche di dimensioni commerciali, che producevano il 4% dell’elettricità mondiale. La capacità totale installata ha superato i 336 GW nel 2014, con la Cina, gli Stati Uniti e il Regno Unito.
