This classic book is Isabella L. Bird’s 1878 travelogue, “Unbeaten Tracks In Japan - An Account of Travels in the Interior Including Visits to the Aborigines of Yezo and the Shrine of Nikko”. After deciding to go to Japan in 1878, Bird travelled 1,400 miles by horse, boat, and foot, and wrote down all that she saw and did. This fascinating volume constitutes the first chronicle of a westerner’s experiences of Japan, and offers a unique insight into its people and culture during the late nineteenth century. Isabella Lucy Bird (1831–1904) was an English explorer, author, and naturalist. Many classic books such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive.
