Este no es un libro sobre tipografía y diseño. A Eric Gill no le interesa el aspecto estético de la tipografía, sino las letras en sí y su efecto en nuestras vidas. Porque las letras están hechas para ser leídas. Por tanto, digámoslo alto y claro: si Un ensayo sobre tipografía fuera apenas un mero manual sobre cursivas, serifas e interlineados, hoy, en estos tiempos en que lo digital se impone, su relevancia sería la de un reloj de sol. Pero conserva toda la vigencia del mundo, porque supone una atinada descripción de los peligros del trabajo deshumanizado y una defensa a ultranza del individuo creador, siempre enfrentado a los dos ritmos –el de la máquina y el del ser humano– que chocan una y otra vez en su día a día. Tan polémico como imprescindible, este ensayo de Gill sigue actuando como una metáfora inmejorable, porque su autor sabe que la tipografía encierra una historia paralela a aquella que ayuda a fijar sobre un soporte, y nos la brinda con una claridad arrolladora.
