A exposição a altos níveis de compostos orgânicos voláteis e semivoláteis pode causar efeitos prejudiciais à saúde. Os hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos (HAP) representam um importante grupo constituinte dos poluentes atmosféricos voláteis/semi-voláteis e alguns deles demonstraram exercer efeitos carcinogénicos e mutagénicos nos seres humanos. Uma vez que a inalação é uma das principais vias de absorção dos compostos HAP e que a gravidade da exposição depende das concentrações no ar, é essencial medir os níveis atmosféricos de HAP. A amostragem ativa é um método preciso para a amostragem de HAP, mas carece de conveniência e capacidade de implantação em grande escala. Por outro lado, a amostragem passiva é mais simples e fácil de usar, podendo ser utilizada de forma discreta em qualquer ambiente exterior ou interior. O trabalho aqui destacado consiste principalmente nos fundamentos do projeto, desenvolvimento, teste e validação de um amostrador passivo baseado em Tenax para poluentes orgânicos voláteis/semivoláteis do ar. O amostrador desenvolvido foi testado em vários ambientes simulados e, finalmente, foi realizado um ensaio de campo para validar as suas capacidades. O desempenho do amostrador foi louvável na medição de HAPs transportados pelo ar com maior volatilidade.
