Niniejsza rozprawa jest refleksją nad mechanizmami tłumaczenia przysłów. Dokonuje przeglądu odpowiednich teorii dotyczących przekładu kultów w ogóle, a przysłów w szczególności, z podwójnej perspektywy analizy i kwestionowania metod proponowanych do tej pory do ich tłumaczenia. Chodzi tu zatem o to, by powiedzieć, jaki jest przekład przysłów, albo lepiej, jaki powinien być, gdyż przysłowia są wypowiedziami o dość szczególnych cechach morfosyntaktycznych. Co więcej, ich funkcja jako nośnika mądrości ludowej danej kultury sprawia, że ich transpozycja z jednego języka na drugi jest dość delikatna. Próbujemy zatem, na podstawie próbek zebranych w dwóch francuskich wersjach Things Fall Apart Chinui Achebe, zaproponować metody, które pomogą w tłumaczeniu przysłów zachować ich oryginalność, zrozumiałość i idiomatyczność w jak największym stopniu.
