Le tube d’acier d’une colonne tubulaire remplie de béton (CSFT) sert à la fois de renfort longitudinal et latéral, et est donc soumis à des contraintes biaxiales. Les avantages de la colonne tubulaire remplie de béton par rapport à d’autres éléments composites sont que le tube d’acier sert de coffrage pour le béton et que le béton rempli empêche le flambage local de la paroi du tube d’acier et évite l’écaillage du béton. Dans l’ensemble, la rigidité de l’élément augmente grâce à l’action composite par rapport aux éléments en acier conventionnels. L’effet de confinement joue également un rôle important sur la capacité de charge du CSFT.
