Travels in Alaska is a non-fiction book written by John Muir, a renowned naturalist, and conservationist. The book is a detailed account of Muir’s travels in Alaska, which he undertook in 1879. The book is divided into ten chapters, each of which describes Muir’s experiences in different parts of Alaska. In the book, Muir writes about the stunning natural beauty of Alaska, its glaciers, mountains, and wildlife. He also describes his encounters with the native people of Alaska, including the Tlingit tribe, and his interactions with the Russian settlers who had established a presence in the region.Muir’s writing is vivid and descriptive, and he captures the essence of Alaska’s wilderness in a way that is both poetic and informative. He also provides a historical context for his travels, discussing the impact of the gold rush on the region and the efforts to preserve Alaska’s natural resources.Overall, Travels in Alaska is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the natural world, history, or travel. It is a testament to Muir’s passion for conservation and his belief in the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations. The most interesting of the short excursions we made from Fort Wrangell was the one up the Stickeen River to the head of steam navigation. From Mt. St. Elias the coast range extends in a broad, lofty chain beyond the southern boundary of the territory, gashed by stupendous canyons, each of which carries a lively river, though most of them are comparatively short, as their highest sources lie in the icy solitudes of the range within forty or fifty miles of the coast. A few, however, of these foaming, roaring streams--the Alsek, Chilcat, Chilcoot, Taku, Stickeen, and perhaps others--head beyond the range with some of the southwest branches of the Mackenzie and Yukon. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
