Os contraceptivos modernos desempenham um papel significativo na gama de intervenções médicas que visam a aplicação prática dos objectivos do planeamento familiar. Entre os mais eficazes e difundidos encontram-se os dispositivos intra-uterinos (DIU). O elemento central do DIU é um fio bimetálico de cobre e prata, que possui propriedades contraceptivas devido à presença do cobre. O fio é um produto em camadas axissimétricas com um diâmetro de 0,35 mm, constituído por um núcleo de prata, que actua como uma estrutura à qual está ligada uma bainha de cobre. A presença de um núcleo de prata é necessária porque a bainha de cobre se dissolve de forma desigual durante a utilização. Sem um núcleo central, podem formar-se fragmentos, o que pode provocar lesões nos órgãos internos.
