Tramping to Lourdes

'Tramping to Lourdes' is an engaging and humble travelogue that chronicles the spiritual and physical journey of John Gibbons as he makes his way on foot through the French countryside. Undertaken in 1928, this pilgrimage takes the reader from the shores of England through the historic province of Anjou and onward to the sacred site of Lourdes. Gibbons, a man from Hornsey in Middlesex, provides a candid and often humorous perspective on the trials and triumphs of a solo traveler in the interwar period. The narrative captures the essence of early 20th-century European travel, offering vivid descriptions of the landscapes, local characters, and the enduring power of faith. As a firsthand account of a Catholic pilgrimage, the work explores themes of devotion, perseverance, and the discovery of grace in the everyday encounters of the road. Gibbons’s writing is accessible and sincere, providing a window into the cultural and religious climate of the time. 'Tramping to Lourdes' remains a compelling read for those interested in historical travel writing, religious history, and the timeless tradition of the walking pilgrimage. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
