Dentro de la esfera del Judo tradicional se crearon varios métodos y katas de defensa personal que fueron practicados por los estudiantes de Judo Kodokan en distintas épocas. Uno de estos métodos fue el Torite no kata, creado en 1924 por un grupo de expertos en Judo pertenecientes al cuerpo de policía metropolitana. Este estudio fue dirigido por el maestro Yamashita Yoshitsugu (primer 10ºdan de Judo) con la aprobación del profesor Jigoro Kano. El Torite no kata muestra un gran refinamiento técnico y conserva los principios del shinken shobu del Judo tradicional y del antiguo Jujutsu. Estudiando detenidamente el Torite no kata aprenderemos a realizar correctamente el atemi, a defendernos de diferentes ataques de cuchillo, a localizar los puntos vitales, a realizar técnicas de luxación a dedos, muñeca, rodilla, tobillo y codo, y a conocer algunas formas de renkoho o conducción policial. Es por lo tanto un kata extraordinariamente útil y eficaz desde la perspectiva de la defensa personal. Lamentablemente este método a caído en desuso. Nuestro objetivo es enseñar y difundir este kata para que estudiantes y profesores de todas las disciplinas puedan beneficiarse de este formidable método.
