Tipos para imprenta: su historia, formas y uso es la obra fundacional de un maestro impresor que explora el arte de la tipografía desde los albores de la imprenta hasta el siglo XX. Por primera vez traducida al español en su versión íntegra, esta edición recupera un clásico de la historia de la tipografía. Rinde, también, un homenaje a Daniel Berkeley Updike, fundador de la legendaria Merrymount Press, en Boston, y pionero como editor e impresor, labor en la que se interesó particularmente por la recuperación histórica de los tipos de imprenta y su estudio. Este primer volumen comprende el alfabeto latino, la invención de la imprenta, el corte y la fundición de tipos, los tipos del siglo XV en Alemania, Italia, Francia, España e Inglaterra, así como los tipos alemanes, italianos y franceses de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII. Al hacer un recuento del desarrollo del diseño tipográfico, Updike resalta la importancia de cada periodo histórico y las lecciones que encierra para impresores y diseñadores tipográficos actuales. Las ilustraciones que se incluyen reproducen páginas cuidadosamente seleccionadas de libros raros y bellos. El texto que las acompaña constituye un comentario continuo sobre la importancia histórica y artística de estos especímenes, que ejemplifican el mejor trabajo de impresores y fundidores de tipos. 10
