Le Timée est un des derniers dialogues de Platon. Après un bref échange avec Socrate, Critias et Hermocrate, le philosophe pythagoricien Timée de Locres expose une réflexion sur l’origine et la nature du monde physique et de l’âme humaine vues comme les œuvres d’un démiurge tout en abordant les questions de la connaissance scientifique et de la place des mathématiques dans l’explication du monde.Écrit vers -360, le Timée se situe chronologiquement entre La République et le Critias avec lesquels il devait composer une trilogie qui comprenait l’Hermocrate, mais rien de ce dialogue n’a jamais été trouvé ; Friedrich Nietzsche suppose que Platon a incorporé ou retravaillé l’Hermocrate et l’a ajouté aux textes des Lois. Cette trilogie avait pour projet de décrire les origines de l’univers, de l’homme et de la société. Selon Luc Brisson, le Timée appartient à la dernière période de Platon.
