'Theoretical Biology' is a seminal work by the pioneering biologist Jakob von Uexküll that offers a profound exploration into the philosophical foundations of the life sciences. Departing from the rigid mechanistic views of his contemporaries, Uexküll introduces a revolutionary perspective on how living organisms perceive and interact with their environments. At the heart of this work is the foundational concept of the Umwelt-the unique, subjective world experienced by every living creature based on its specific sensory and motor capabilities. The text delves into the intricate relationship between an organism and its surroundings, arguing that life cannot be understood merely through physical and chemical reactions but must be viewed as a coordinated, purposeful system. Uexküll’s analysis covers topics such as biological space and time, the nature of perception, and the functional cycles that link an animal to its world. By positioning the organism as an active subject rather than a passive object, 'Theoretical Biology' laid the groundwork for modern ethology, biosemiotics, and cognitive science. This translation by Doris L. MacKinnon brings Uexküll’s complex theories to a wider audience, preserving the intellectual depth of a work that continues to influence contemporary thought in biology and the philosophy of science. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
