South Africa, a country rich in natural resources, had a singular mission with the arrival of the Cold War: Get the world to embrace apartheid. The strategy was remarkable in the sense that it was seeking to preserve a society that almost everyone condemned. As a result, South Africa found itself at odds with other states in the region, including Mozambique, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, and Angola. The conflicts were part of the overall Cold War, but they differed from other wars on the African continent. Miguel Jnior, a general officer of the Angolan armed forces and a military historian, examines the war in this extended analysis. He highlights how: belligerent states prepared for war and used force; opposing interests played a role in conflicts; strategic thinking drove South Africas overall strategy; and battles led to significant consequences.
