In the summer of 66 CE, a young Temple official in Jerusalem persuaded the priests at the altar to stop performing a sacrifice on behalf of the Roman Emperor. That act of defiance - the withdrawal of the daily offering that had been the symbol of Jewish accommodation with Roman power - ignited one of the most catastrophic conflicts of the ancient world. The First Jewish-Roman War lasted seven years and consumed the province of Judaea, the city of Jerusalem, and the Second Temple itself, the most magnificent sanctuary in the ancient Mediterranean world.Drawing on the testimony of Flavius Josephus, the archaeological record of the siege sites, and two centuries of modern scholarship, Conrad Brennan reconstructs the war in full: the decades of fiscal extraction and administrative failure that made revolt inevitable; the ideological landscape of Zealots, Sicarii, and messianic prophets who gave the resistance its competing visions; the campaigns of Vespasian and Titus that methodically compressed the rebellion toward its catastrophic end; and the human cost paid by the hundreds of thousands who died or were enslaved in the war’s aftermath. This is also the story of what the war made. The destruction of the Temple forced Judaism to reinvent itself as a portable, text-centred tradition capable of surviving two millennia of exile. It accelerated Christianity’s separation from its Jewish matrix. And it left a wound in the landscape of Jerusalem that has never fully healed. The First Jewish-Roman War is not ancient history. It is the beginning of the world we still inhabit.

BThe religious communities of early modern Eastern Europe—particularly those with a mystical bent—are typically studied in isolation. Yet the heavy Slavic imprint on Jewish popular mysticism and pervasive Judaizing tendencies among Christian dissenters call into question the presumed binary quality of Jewish-Christian interactions. In Holy Dissent: Jewish and Christian Mystics ...

In 1,500 pogroms across more than 1,300 localities, somewhere between 50,000 and 200,000 Jews were killed - not as a by-product of revolution but as its recurring, systematic accompaniment.
