Since the late 19th century, the main and still unresolved issue in the Middle East has been the so-called 'Palestinian problem,' which has become increasingly political, or, to use a popular term, geopolitical. The 'Palestinian problem' is intertwined in myriad ways with the much older 'Jewish question,' which is viewed differently, and often antagonistically, by Jews in the diaspora, Jews in the newly created Israel, and representatives of the Christian and Muslim worlds. The United States, with its sizable Jewish diaspora, could not avoid involvement in efforts to settle or at the very least make less contentious regional issues that were of significance to Great Britain, France, the USSR, and other involved nations. С созданием государства Израиль в 1948 году мало что изменилось; борьба интересов только усилилась...
